Middletown native Schwarber steals show during tiebreaker swing-off at MLB All-Star Game
Major League Baseball had a first-of-its-kind tiebreaker swing-off at the 2025 All-Star Game Tuesday night and a Middletown, Ohio, native was at the center of it all.
Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who was born in Middletown and went to Middletown High School, won the game’s Most Valuable Player award for his performance.
The National League led their American League counterparts 6-0 through six innings, but the AL fought back to tie the score at six by the ninth inning, sending the game to extra innings.
As part of new rules implemented by MLB in 2022, the All-Star Game was then decided by a tiebreaker swing-off, in which three players from each team received three swings to hit as many home runs as possible, with the team hitting the most home runs declared the game’s winner.
Schwarber was the second hitter for the NL and powered his team with three home runs. The NL ended with four home runs to the AL’s three.
Tuesday was the third All-Star Game of Schwarber’s career. He was also named an All-Star in 2021 and 2022.
Over the course of his 11-year career, Schwarber has become one of baseball’s premier power hitters, with 314 home runs. He has already hit 30 for the Phillies in 2025.
